The Monster

Winner

by Fiona Stockley

The forest had claws and teeth, nipping at his hind legs and pushing him to run. Run. Run. Run. That's all he thought about. Run. Don't let it catch you. Like it caught the forest. Run. Run. The monster seemed to slow at bay, withdrawing, but the fox didn’t stop. He knew better than that. He had heard tales of the waves of fire that destroyed the land. He didn’t let himself stop. Run. Don’t let it catch you. Tendrils on its smouldering talons seeped through the trees. Most of the forest is gone now. Lost in the burning inferno. He was almost at the border. Almost to the lake. The monster couldn’t hunt him there. There the fox could rest before it caught up. Then he would run. Till he couldn’t outrun it anymore. The smell of smoke lay in the back of his head, buried there. Unforgettable. He doubted he would ever be rid of the smothering scent of ash and destruction.

Poem

Runner-up

by Clayton Mo

In groves where flora once sweetly sighed,
through meadows green,
beneath skies of azure sea,
with the sweet smell of pine once in the air
trees and flowers swaying to the rhythm of the wind
Now a graveyard where life once thrived

Short Story

by Allison Jiang

Today we all gather right here under this great tree. To celebrate. To celebrate the birth of this wonderful town. But before all the festivities begin. Let me tell you a story. It all begins with me, and do you want to know what I saw? Right then and there? I saw a tree! One with branches reaching to the heavens, beauty flowed out of its branches and flourished. Child of Gaia, The first one I had ever seen. The very one we stand under today. Tell me at what age did you first see a tree? 1? 2? Well for me, it was at the ripe old age of 37. You see, at that time I had been living underground. Simply because of selfish people, who only cared about more. More trees to build.

Climate Change

by Benjamin Lyu

A polar bear is searching for food on the sea ice for seals. It has to eat enough food before all the ice melted in the summer, which meant they could no longer hunt. The polar bear has to wait for 5 months before it can hunt again when the sea freezes. But in the past 50 years, the global temperature has increased by 1 degree Celsius, and the amount of sea ice decreased by half. If the sea ice disappears, the polar bears will start disappearing too. There are lots of other animal species like the polar bear that are also facing extinction. According to CNN, 70,000 species are facing extinction due to climate change. You may hear about climate change everywhere, on television, in newspapers, or in conversations with your friends. Climate change affects us significantly. Climate change and global warming can also cause more severe weather, increased drought, rising oceans, food shortages, as well as poverty and displacement.

The Bracelet

by Amira Luo

My family has owned this nuclear energy company for many years. I let my employees dump all of the radioactive waste in the lake since it was much cheaper than burying it deep underground. Recently, I had heard many rumours that there were strange creatures made out of radiation wandering about. I must investigate the situation at the lake. I decided to carry a gun with me in case of an emergency.
