Another Realm Above

by Lindsay Zhang

“First and foremost...” I mumbled. "No, to begin with”? I groaned in frustration. What if I started with a big statement? How would the future portray my diary once they find it? I need to be much more clear.
Without a single word written on my coffee stained paper, I left my room and decided to take a quick breather outside.

Before I had even gotten the chance to step out the door I was suddenly greeted by my elder sister. “There's a pleasant breeze and glorious sunshine adorning the remains of some buildings nearby” She smiled ear to ear at me. "Shall we go for a walk?”

I stepped back a bit. "Sure. Let me clean up my desk though." She ecstatically clapped and did a twirl. "I'll be waiting!" She in a sing-song voice as she ran down the pier. I took my time cleaning up. It was practically the end of the world after all. We had all the time the Earth would give us.

I sighed blissfully. My sister is still the happy-go lucky person she always was, I envy the way she always stayed calm in desperate situations. Nevertheless, we make a good team. Just the two of us. It’s been us two for a while. Ever since ORION-957 took nearly the whole world’s population to some planet they call HX-109833 B. Many things are named by number and letter. Sometimes even with symbols to make it sound more “high-tech." Personally, I believe that it haphazardly. I would be far more interested if a planet were named, "Osacion" or Kesani"

Only now I realized I was finished. "Guess I got lost in thought again.." Not wanting to keep Pearl waiting, I hurried to the door to see her sitting on the edge of the pier. She kicked her feet and stared into the sky.

I miss my mom and dad. Why did they have to leave when we needed them the most? I’m only 15 and Pearl is 20. With the water level rising everyday, it’s only a matter of time till our final departure.

“You’ve been awfully quiet.. Is something wrong?” Pearl inquired. I shook my head. “Ah, it's nothing, I was just thinking.”

I suddenly heard a low rumble from under the pier. The clouds became darker as fate called upon it to finish the remaining leftovers, which would be us. It was about time. I can’t live like this anymore, and I know Pearl can’t either. “Haha, would you look at that. Our time is up” I wrapped my hands around hers for the time being. I could feel my eyes getting heavier as Pearl’s grip loosened. The waves crashing against my body numbed me. I could feel my life being pulled away as the waves lulled me into a dark, deep, sleep.
